Porto will host the 4th Rugby Sevens World University Championship between the 21st and the 24th July 2010. The organization of this international event is responsibility of the University of Porto and the National University Sports Federation. More than 500 athletes from 32 teams, male and female, are expected to challenge for the highest honours. It is expected that this event channels all the city’s strengths so that all participants and supports have an unforgettable time in Porto.

Despite having only recently attained relative notoriety in Portugal, Rugby – a sport of humble origins dated back to the 19th century – is played by U Porto students at competitive level since the 1960’s.

The event is held at the 28,263 capacity Bessa 21st Century stadium. The stadium offers an unrivalled spectator experience with the spectators close to the field and with the stands, especially the higher level, almost at a 45º incline. The stadium is part of a developing sports complex and is located in the occidental part of Porto city. The Bessa 21st Century stadium is close to the city’s main transport links, there is a Metro station and the Francisco Sá Carneiro international airport is close by.
