Suva Rugby Union
The Suva Rugby Union was formed in 1913 and is the oldest of the provincial unions in Fiji. The coveted Escott Shield, which also began in 1913, is the longest-running rugby trophy is Fiji, donated by Sir Ernest Bickham Sweet-Escott, Governor of Fiji from 1912 to 1918.
Suva remains the largest provincial rugby union in Fiji with 58 clubs, and has provided the national team with plenty of reps over the years. At times, Suva has managed to field a starting team containing 15 national reps.

The City of Suva
Suva is the capital and largest city of Fiji. It is the commercial and political centre of Fiji, and the largest urban area in the South Pacific outside of
Australia and New Zealand. It is Fiji's main port city. The city of Suva has a population of more than 85,000, whilst the Greater Suva urban area is home to some 170,000 residents.

National Stadium
The National Stadium was built in 1979 to host the South Pacific Games of the same year. It offers the most comprehensive and modern facilities of any
stadia in the Pacific Islands. The grandstand has a seating capacity of 4,500, whilst the three-sided embankment can accommodate a further 18,000. In addition, there are 16 corporate hospitality boxes at the sea end of the ground.
From high in the grandstand, the National Stadium affords spectators one of the most spectacular sports sights in the word with views over the Pacific
Ocean, just metres from the southern boundary of the ground.
The National Stadium has hosted Fiji’s most important rugby Test matches for the past 30 years, including epic clashes against the All Blacks, Wallabies, France, England, Scotland and Wales.
It was also the main stadium for the 1979 and 2003 South Pacific Games.

International Rugby 7s in Suva
Suva’s National Stadium hosted the very successful Fiji International 7s from 1993 to 2000 when it was part of the very first IRB World 7s Series. The Suva Rugby Union now wishes to give birth once more to international sevens rugby
in Fiji, kicking off in January 2010 and leading up to the Suva Rugby Union’s centenary in 2012.

Suva 7s Series
As a build-up to the Suva City 7s, the Suva Rugby Union will host three
domestic 7s tournaments around Fiji to reinvigorate the development of the
sport and assist in the identification of talent. The three-tournament series will
serve as qualifiers for the Suva City 7s, with the best teams invited to join the
international 7s.
The Suva 7s Series will be held as follows:
Date Venue Teams
6-7 Nov 2009 National Stadium, Suva 48
11-12 Dec 2009 Churchill Park, Lautoka 48
8-9 Jan 2010 Subrail Park, Labasa 32
The winners and runners-up of each of the three tournaments will receive automatic qualification to the Suva Int’l 7s on 21-23 January. The organisers
will then allocate additional places to local teams according to availability, with a minimum of 8 places reserved for local clubs.

Broadcast & Media partners
The Suva City Int’l 7s and the domestic Suva 7s Series guarantee full TV and radio coverage for the region, with a TV highlights package produced for overseas markets and a tournament DVD to be available throughout Fiji.
In addition to the Official Media Partners, we will host key journalists from participating countries to ensure solid international coverage as well.
The Suva 7s Series, beginning early November, will give three months of continuous publicity for the Suva City 7s, building to a huge climax in January.
