The San Diego Invitational is the official participatory tournament of the IRB USA Sevens Tournament. The SDI is open for players of all ages and skill levels.

Played over the two days prior to and first morning of the USA Sevens Tournament, the SDI helps make the second week in February the premier rugby week in the US. In the past, the SDI has featured prominent teams from across the US and Canada, as well as a few select sides from around the world, and 2009 will showcase an even larger array of teams. All forms of rugby will be on display, from International Touch to Rugby League to both 15s and 7s versions of Rugby Union.
