Driftwood Sevens Day One Review

Back to blog listing »

Saturday 12 December 2009

By Maik Kwambo

Day one of the Driftwood Sevens, the final round of the 2009 Western Union National Sevens Circuit saw Blak Blad RFC stun Kenya Commercial Bank RFC 7-5 in pool B action enroute to booking a quarter final berth.

We look at action from each of the four pools.

Pool A

Strathmore,Mwamba advance

Current NSC leaders Strathmore Leos had an easy time sailing to the main cup quarters by virtue of registering easy wins over their opponents. They beat outgoing NSC champions Mwamba RFC 22-0 in their opener before registering 34-0 and 35-0 wins over Shepherds RFC and Nondies respectively. Mwamba RFC won their remaining two matches to join the Leos in the last eight while Nondies and Shepherds will contend for the bowl.

Pool B

KCB survive Blad scare

KCB, losing finalists at the Kabeberi Sevens were a rather fortunate bunch, topping this pool with a slightly superior points difference after a three way tie that also included Mean Machine and Blak Blad. The three sides each won two games and lost one and the calcuations worked to KCB's advantage courtesy of a +18 points difference that saw them clinch the pool ahead of Blak Blad who had earlier stunned them 7-5. Blad had a +16 points difference and will be in Sunday's main cup quarter final. Unlucky Mean Machine had a +12 points difference that consigned them to bowl action come Sunday alongside Kenya Polytechnic who lost all their pool games.

Pool C

Smooth sailing for Quins

Kenya Harlequin who have their eyes on the 2009 Western Union NSC had an easy time, winning all their pool games and finishing top of pool C. Mombasa Polytechnic join them in the main cup quarters while Homeboyz and Daystar will be out to secure the bowl title.

Pool D

Impala, Nakuru through

Impala RFC topped this pool winning all three games that saw them progress to the quarter finals. They will be joined by Nakuru RFC while Kisumu RFC and Eldoret Flames drop to the bowl.
