Rugby at its Electrifying Best!

Monday 05 October 2009

The inaugural Fitness First Central Coast Sevens has been deemed a major success with the focus now firmly on 2010. A number of teams met the night prior to the tournament at a tournament welcome evening, the weather was not conducive to 7's being wet but that did not dampen the spirit or the rugby.

The Burwood Blues were exceptional in disposing of one of the tournament favourites Warringah in their pool rounds and another big gun favourite Manly in the semi final. Burwood came up against Sydney Shute Shield premier rugby club the Parramatta Two Blues and proved too strong for the Parra team winning 34-24.

In the womens tournament Warringah the 2009 Sydney premiers were outclassed by the Tuggeranong Vikings from the A.C.T in the pool stages the team including national player Kristy Giteau progressed to the final against a very strong Sydney University (runners up in the Sydney premiership this year). the match was close with Sydney Uni winning 20-10.

The tournament attracted a number of fringe, former & current Australian national sevens players along with League Legend Cliffy Lyons and New Zealand World Cup winning League player Greg Eastwood who is heading to the English Super League in December. National Sevens Coach Michael O'Connor was in attendance casting an eye over the talent with representives of the ARU high performance unit.

Feedback from the teams has been extremely positive with all indications that teams are looking forward to returning in 2010 to what has been a great start to the Australian Sevens Season. Entry to the 2010 tournament will be open very soon allowing international teams to get organised and make plans to visit Australia and attend one of the fastest growing tournaments on the Sevens circuit.

a great tournament to start of the season and even though the conditions were not the best for sevens rugby, we all had a ball. We really cant wait to get back next year and defend our title.
