CASUARINA COUGARS RUFC
Casuarina Rugby Club (Cougars) was established in 1975 and is a founding member of the Northern Territory Rugby Union Inc. The Cougars were founded as a result of the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy where the main single men’s accommodation was established to house the clean up crews. As a result of the location the Club was first named Tracy Village. As the cleaning up progressed along with the enormous task of rebuilding Darwin, there were more and more service personnel and civilian contractors settling in Darwin, and as a direct consequence so did the Club in members. With the impact of rebuilding Darwin and the fact that Tracy Village was so close to the ever-growing suburb of Casuarina, it was decided that the Club should reflect the main area of conception thus being the district of Casuarina. The Cougars also has the distinct honour of receiving a standing invitation to compete at the Singapore Sevens every year and we are now in our 27th year. This honour came about when the Cougars were invited to participate in the 1983 tournament to which the Club won the Ablitt Cup. The Cougars went through all games undefeated by a record 163 – 0 over the whole tournament. This is a record that to this date has not been met or surpassed by any Club team contesting the Singapore 7’s. SA Vipers surpassed that record in 2009 however they are not classed as a true Club side therefore our record is still unblemished in this Tournament.
In the past few of years the Club has had a renewed focus on this tournament with the Club taking out the Jug Final in 2008 and 2009 the Club succeeded in winning the Bowl Final. All that’s left to complete the set is the Plate. The Club has put a lot of energy into the hybrid game with the Club being the highest seeded Club side in the 2010 Hottest 7’s and showing that we were a very competitive force for a Club side, this has resulted in being given an invitation to contest the Borneo 7’s later in 2010 before we head off to the Singapore 7’s.
The Club has an affiliation membership base of more than 100 registered senior players and over 150 junior registered players. The Club field’s every grade that the Northern Territory Rugby Union allows with A Grade and B Grade in the seniors and Under 5’s through to Under 17’s in the junior ranks. Cougars are one the strongest Clubs in the Darwin and Northern Territory Competition.
