North Wales Exiles shock winners of International Open at Manchester Rugby 7s Festival
North Wales Exiles defied all the odds to be crowned International Open Champions at the Manchester Sevens. In a nail biting all-Welsh final, they came from behind to clinch a 31-29 victory with almost the last kick of the game against one of the longest running sides in sevens rugby.
Eight teenagers were part of the victorious squad who outplayed the world famous Mel's Exiles in a tense finale.
Earlier in the day, the North Wales team had finished top of their group beating the HFW Wailers Academy and CTS Titans. In the quarter finals, they completely outplayed a Lancashire side, boasting several members of the Sale team, before outclassing pre-tournament favourites Susies Sevens in their semi-final.
After seeing the draw for the opening rounds, many observers had predicted an early exit for the newcomers and the day started badly when four members of the Exiles squad got lost on the way to the ground. Despite missing the kick-off, three of the four players came on as second half substitutes and all made it onto the scoresheet in a 33-5 rout of the much fancied Wailers Academy side.
Team manager Marcus Copeland was clearly overcome with emotion after seeing his squad reach their third final in succession.
"Just three months ago nobody had even heard of us and now we are one of the most talked about sevens teams in Wales. It is a remarkable achievement by a talented group of young players who clearly have a very bright future ahead of them."
Copeland was also quick to praise head coach Aled Trenhaile and his assistant Jimmy Waring.
"Aled was unable to make it here today as he was at a wedding but Jim did a great job in his absence. This tournament was a huge step up from any previous game we've been involved in but both Jim and the players rose to the challenge.
"This has been an amazing day and I want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved with the North Wales Exiles. In particular, both myself and the players would like to thank our sponsors Chris Spillane, of Spillane & Company Wealth Management, Guy Watson, of Drooling Frog, and Akuma Sports, for their continued help and financial support."
Highlights of the North Wales Exiles in action at the Manchester Sevens can be seen next week on Sky Sports (Tuesday July 13 at 8pm on Sky Sports 4) and photos will be posted on the Exiles website later in the week.

North Wales Exiles plan to sink Royal Navy at Manchester Sevens!
North Wales Exiles face their sternest test to date this Saturday (July 3) when they come face to face with some of the world's best known rugby sevens teams at the Manchester Sevens.
The 13 man squad travel to the International Open, in Sale, knowing there is absolutely no room for error if they want to add to their Llangeod Sevens title.
But waiting for them in the opening round is the Royal Navy - regarded by many as one of the country's leading exponents of the seven-a-side game.
The Exiles have chosen to strengthen their side ahead of the tournament and include centre Gareth Holgate, who makes his first appearance after recovering from a shoulder injury. Also making their debuts will be winger Ed Telwright and back-row forward Luke Allen - two of six UWIC players in the line-up.
Rhyl will again have a strong presence in the team with skipper James Farrell, hooker Michael Hall, winger Kriss Wilkes and utility players Rob Tilley, Sean Condon and John Hall all retaining their places in the squad.
Team manager Marcus Copeland said his team faced a real challenge just to qualify from their group.
The North Wales team will be sporting a new shirt at the competion after securing a sponsorship deal with the highly respected Chris Spillane, of Spillane and Co Wealth Management. The Colwyn Bay-based pensions and investment specialist will be joining Copeland Mortgage Services as the team's new main sponsor.
With the team now getting nationwide recognition, they are hoping to attract more sponsors as they look to build on a staggering debut season on the sevens circuit. Copeland added "we are rapidly establishing ourselves as one of the leading sevens teams in Wales and we would like to build on this success going into next season. This can only be achieved with financial backing and I urge anyone with a love of rugby to get behind this talented group of boys."
