MILLFIELD SCHOOL
Millfield win again at Surrey School Sevens
Millfield continued their rich form in this seasons sevens calendar with victory at the prestigious Surrey School Sevens. They played some quality rugby in the Richmond sunshine to progress through the group stages with relative ease and set up a quarter-final with Brighton College.
Millfield overturned a strong Brighton side with key performances from Captain Henry Thomas, Miles Mantella and JJ Kilmartin in possibly the toughest game of the day, although probably by a closer scoreline than the team would have liked.
The semi- final was played against Harrow, and the Millfield performance gained these plaudits from UR7s 'Featured News'. Harrow showed they were far from fearful of their opponents in scoring first from a turnover deep in Millfield territory and whilst the Somerset school hit back almost immediately it was again Harrow who pushed the level with some great wide play and weak Millfield defending they got their 2nd. From the restart though Millfield gained possession and behind some masterful control from Captain Henry Thomas they scored again and held the half-time lead. After the intermission the Millfield fitness showed with 3 very well worked scores. As had been throughout the day, Millfield dominated the breakdown and with some skilful midfield play were able to pull away. Harrow scored the final try but though the game was gone by that point it went some way to show the valiant nature of the side.
Another tournament, another final for Millfield. After their perfromance against a strong Harrow outfit, which carried Billy Vunipola (brother of Old Millfieldian and current England U20 Mako), the boys were at the top of their form and it shone through against an utterly outclassed Tonbridge side. Millfield came out 32-0 winners, with yet another outstanding performance from Miles Mantella. Millfield scored at regular intervals and showed a lot of the glittering attacking and strong defence that has served them so well over this season.
Millfield now have a rest before competing in the biggest tournament of the year at Rosslyn Park 'National Schools'.
