Annual Past vs. Present Cup

Back to blog listing »

Friday 19 June 2009

Saturday June 6th saw the Annual CSG Past vs Present Cup.

More than 50 current and former players from Coleg Sir Gar took part, and the poor weather couldnt stop the fun and banter, and more importantly..... the flash 'show-off' rugby that Coleg Sir Gar is famous for!

Because instead of the traditional 15-a-side games that are usually asociated with Past vs Present games, we do things a little differently. The Cup is played in the way of a Ryder Cup-style 6-a-side tournament. Five teams of current Coleg Sir Gar academy members took on fve teams of former academy members. Each Past team took on each Present team, with points awarded for each win. The collective score is then added to the totals for either the Past or Present side.

The Old Boys were defending the crown they won last year, but this year, after the succesful season of the academy side, were cautious of the youngsters. There had been plenty of banter and abuse in the build-up to the day, so neither team could afford to lose!

And after some fantastic displays of skills and attractive attacking rugby, it was the Former CSG players who emerged as winners, in quite emphatic style! Boasting a host of professional and semi-pro players, the young lads of the Present academy team had no answer, and bragging-rights until next june went to the Old Boys.

Daniel Lewis was voted MVP for the Present team, and Llyr Lloyd was voted MVP for the Past team. A good piss-up and reunion followed, and the Annual Sports Awards took place in the evening to celebrate the achievements of the current rugby academy in such a great season.

The event was a great success yet again, and keeps getting bigger and bigger each year. We are already looking forward to next year, where the Old Boys will again defend the trophy against the new batch of exciting and taleneted young academy players.
