The Godfathers, or they were originally known 'The Avenging Disco Godfathers', were formed in the summer of 1997 at Exeter University by the original Dons, Garth Hannaford James 'Porky' Halcro Johnston, and David Ayres to play in the Exeter University 7's of that year.
The ethos behind the Godfathers has always been to entertain both on and off the field with the emphasis on the legendary Godfather nights out.
In the very first year of formation the Godfathers did both in controversial style earning the Godfather motto 'Odernit dum metuant'.
Formed initially to play in sevens tournaments throughout the South West the Godfathers have always prided themselves on exhibition sevens played by an invitational team or all ages shapes and sizes.
After domestic sustained success the Godfathers have expanded their boundaries in recent years by winning the Hamburg 7's in 2006 and coming 3rd in the Romanga 7's in Italy in 2007 and Winning th eWarsaw 10's in 2008.
Last year the first Godfather team to enter a touch rugby tournament ended up winning the Old Bristolians touch tournament!
The Godfathers can also boast a formidable alumni of players including former England captain and 7's specialist Pat Sanderson and fellow England caps Alex Sanderson and Matt Moore as well as rugby league caps Kevin Ellis and Barrie John Mather and current Laos superstar Will Luangrath!
This year the Godfathers will once again be touring and playing in as many tournaments as possible so if you run a tournament or are interested in playing contact us!
