Apache and Marchwood favourites for Windsor

Wednesday 21 April 2010 (UR7s)

The stunning backdrop of Windsor Castle will once again play host to sevens this weekend.

Windsor RFC are putting on their third annual event and welcome 20 men’s teams and 8 women’s sides to Berkshire on Saturday (24 April).

Last year’s winners Apache are back once again to defend their title in the men’s competition. It is set to be a busy weekend for Adam Hurst’s side, with the Sunshine Sevens beckoning the following day. With a strong squad selected for 2010 they look one of the major favourites to defend their title.

The Marchwood Dolphins, with strong links to the British Army, will be hot on Apache’s heels along with the Phantoms. The King Prawns will make their debut in Windsor following a successful inaugural season for this relatively new team to the circuit.

The side is made-up of former pupils from King's College School in Wimbledon and enjoyed wins at the Lightwater Sevens and Heineken 10s in 2009.

Leeds and Bristol Universities will also be in attendance as they look to prepare for the BUCS Nationals the following weekend.

“We’ve had to cut the men’s teams down from 25 to 20, to make it more manageable, but we are delighted to have extended our women’s competition from four to eight teams,” said Tournament Organiser, Andy Lee.

Defending ladies champion Richmond are back with Ealing Jades, Thames Valley Ladies, Chess Valley Ladies, Pirates, Buccaneers, Camberley Ladies, and Teddington all involved.

“We really look forward to the event down at the club and it is great to be in a position to host something like this at the end of the season,” added Lee.

“We host a variety of tournaments at Windsor, such as the Vets sevens, Minis, Schoolboys sevens and Construction sevens. It is a popular venue and the club likes hosting them.”
