Selkirk go top in Borders as Kelso miss out

Monday 19 April 2010 (UR7s)

Selkirk have gone to the top of the Kings of the Sevens table following Sunday’s win at the Berwick Sevens tournament at Scremerston.

They beat Kelso in the final by 52-19 and now have 26 points at the top of the log. It proved a frustrating weekend for Kelso who the day before had finished runners-up to the hosts at the Hawick Sevens.

They sit close behind Selkirk in the overall table on 24 points Kelso with Jedforest third on 24.

Hawick made it three-in-a-row on Saturday at their home tournament after fielding their strongest side. They ousted Kelso by 31-26 in a Borders-dominated event with Neil Renwick scoring a brace in the final.

Kelso overcame a spirited Langholm 21-12 in the first round of the knockout-style tournament before brushing past Sterling County (31-7) and Kelso (27-14) to reach the final. Hawick over-ran a second string Melrose (43-5) before beating Boroughmuir (34-12) and Jedforest (24-12) to book their place in the final.

Speedy Selkirk

On Sunday Lee Jones celebrated joining Edinburgh as a professional player by scoring six tries to lead Selkirk to victory in Berwick.

Selkirk’s pace was the major contributing factor to their success with tries from captain Fraser Harkness, who scored seven overall, and Callum Johnstone proving enough in the final.

Selkirk cruised into the final beating a Presidents VII (48-0), Peebles (26-12), and Berwick (34-5) in a reduced tournament.

There were three withdrawals with the Denmark Vikings unable to travel due to the Icelandic volcanic ash crisis with local sides Duns and Earlston also unable to put out sides.

The two major surprises were the defeat of the holders, Watsonians, in round two by Jed while Berwick shocked Hawick, a shadow of the side, which had won their own tournament a day earlier.
