Fans at Kenya’s premier Sevens tournament will be treated to new stands for this year’s showpiece.
Safari Sevens organisers have given the go ahead for the construction of six temporary stands at a cost of Sh12m at the East Africa grounds on Ngong Road.
1500 extra seats will be provided for supporters who have often been unhappy with the standard of viewing areas at the event.
The construction is part of KRU’s long term programme for rugby grounds development in Kenya. Kenya Rugby Union chairman, Richard Omwela, said the construction of the stands will be a temporary remedy for the fans.
“Fans have always voiced their concerns of lacking a decent place to sit yet they pay handsomely to watch matches. That they are forced to stand the entire period of the matches,” saud Omwela speaking to the Daily Nation.
“We had to come up with temporary measures to cater for their needs before embarking on our long term initiatives.”
Omwela also revealed plans to acquire the adjacent Ligi Ndogo grounds where plans are being hatched to construct a 20,000 stadium, with a view to eventually being in a position to host an IRB Sevens leg.
Kenya’s Shujaa retained their Safari Sevens last year after routing the Emerging Boks 40-19 thanks to four Collins Injera tries. The Africans are currently lying in seventh position on the overall IRB Sevens World Series log with two legs remaining this season at London (22-23 May) and Edinburgh (29-30 May).
