Japan's Waseda University triumph in France

Wednesday 14 April 2010 (UR7s)

Japan prevailed over Kenya in the battle of the Business Schools at the South of France at the weekend.

In the inaugural French Riviera Sevens, 10 Schools were represented with Tokoyo’s Waseda University triumphant over Strathmore University to take the main Deloitte Trophy.

In a nail biting final, a conversion proved the only difference between the sides in the 19-17 win for the Japanese.

Both Waseda and Strathmore were unbeaten in the Pool stages at the tournament that was hosted by the SKEMA Business School. French hopes rested on INP Toulouse who were runners-up in Pool A to give them a semi-final berth.

Despite pushing Strathmore hard it was the Kenyans who prospered 10-17 to book their spot in the final. Waseda proved far too strong for the UK’s Aston University in the other semi-final, coming through 37-0.

Aston did gain some consolation in the third/fourth play-off finished beating INP Toulouse 27-20 in an entertaining and open encounter.

Well done Strathmore for the good show on your first international outing. Kudos Waseda for the hard fought win, this is the way to go for university rugby and we hope the tournament will attract more teams next year! Cheers
