UK Easter Sevens round-up

Thursday 8 April 2010 (UR7s)

Esher lose out in final

Old Reigatians gained revenge on National One outfit Esher to take the main final of the Caterham Sevens in Surrey.

Esher, whose 1st XV are on the cusp of promotion to the Championship, put out a youthful looking squad for the event and looked on course with pool wins against the Reigatians (33-7), Old Caterhamians (39-0), Cow Tippin Penguins (44-7), Warlingham II (43-5), and Staggs (33-10) in the group stages.

But injuries cost them dear in the day’s finale where they ran into an inspired and rejuvenated Old Reigatians in a 10-22 reverse.

In the Cup semis the Reigatians looked clinical in the 26-7 win over Elite Rugby, with Esher labouring to a 19-14 win over Warlingham.

The Staggs beat Old Tiffinians to the Plate with New Ash Green beating hosts beating Old Caterhamians 19-0.
Next year sees the 50th running of the tournament.

Olaf Axes too good in New Malden

Old Emmanuel RFC in New Malden, Surrey was also a haven for Sevens at the weekend with the 6th GM Memorial Sevens.

Old Hamptonians, DGS Baby OE U21’s, and Fortus Nutrition Cowboys all impressed throughout the day. But it was the Olaf Axes who proved a cut above the rest in taking the major honours.

Old Hamptonians (31-0) Well Oiled Beef Hooked (36-5) and The Phantoms (36-0) were soundly beaten by the Axes in the group stages. A ruthless 31-0 win against a well drilled OE Under-21 side was arguably the Axes best performance and sterling defence carried them to a 15-7 win against the Fortus Nutrition Cowboys in the final.

OE U21 edged out Old Hamptonians for the Plate and DGS Baby saw off The Phantoms for the Bowl.

Harlequins & Stumblers winners in South West

Down in the West Country, 13 teams were on show at Penryn RFC on Easter Sunday for the annual Sevens tournament. The Handstand Harlequins entered two teams, proving formidable backed up by players from Redruth and Launceston.

The two sides met each other in the semi-final with the 1st VII going through.

In the other semi Seahawk Islanders overcame Saltash by a narrow margin. The Islanders met their match in the Quins though who proved too strong and fit in the 6 tries to 1 win.

Down at Salcombe RFC it was the Stumblers, made up of players from Henley RFC and Berkshire, who triumphed. Last year’s runners-up, the Rhinos, were again humbled in the final by six tries. Exmouth Colts were another side to impress at the annual event.
