more »French Universities cruise to Stanislas win
French Universities (France U1) have gained revenge on Les Bleus at the Stanislas Sevens in Nancy last weekend. In a reverse of last year’s final the students put in a special performance in the final to beat Les Bleus in an entertaining 33-17 win.
The winners, who also included a second team (U2), were totally dominant throughout the weekend breezing through their pool matches on Saturday with wins against Morocco (38-0), Barbarians (56-0), and Franche Comté (52-0).
Les Bleus meanwhile were made to work much harder in the group stages, drawing with G Sevens (21-21) and being forced to dig deep to overcome Poland 19-17.
In the Cup quarter-finals U1 swept aside Poland 48-0, with the U2 beating Belgium by the same score line. Les Bleus were again made to work for a win against for a win 19-14 against Morocco with Algeria beating SOOS 17-5.
The students met each other in the last four in a grudge match with U2 having nothing to lose against their superior opponents. But U1 power proved too much in the 35-14 win with Les Bleus joining them in the final thanks to a 26-5 win against Algeria - their best performance of the weekend.
In the other tiers Poland beat Morocco for the Plate with Germany grabbing the Bowl. Burgandy beat Switzerland 35-24 to lift the shield.
