Pumas pip England for USA glory

Monday 16 February 2009 (IRB)

Argentina came from behind to deny England back to back IRB Sevens World Series titles, winning 19-14 in the final of the USA Sevens in San Diego. It is only their second Sevens World Series title.

Trailing 14-5 at the break, the Pumas hit back with tries through Martin Rodrigues and Lucas Amorosino, before their defence kicked in to hold England at bay for five minutes.

Tom Biggs and Ben Gollings had both sandwiched first-half tries for England around one by Argentina captain Santiago Gomez Cora.

The win opens up the race for the 2008-09 World Series, as England and South Africa are now joint-top on 60 points, eight clear of New Zealand on 52. Argentina lie fourth with 48 ahead of Fiji, Kenya and the USA, who take 12 points from their home event.

In the semi-finals England performed their own comeback to turn around a 12-0 deficit to beat South Africa 22-19, while Argentina overcame hosts the United States 19-14 thanks to a late try from Gomez Cora.

Elsewhere New Zealand beat Kenya in the final of the Plate 22-7. The Kiwis led 12-0 at the break after two tries by the impressive Viliame Waqaseduadua and, although Collins Injera pulled one back for the Kenyans, Waqaseduadua struck again and a fourth try for Ben Souness rounded off a convincing win.

Earlier, New Zealand trailed Fiji 14-5 at half-time in their semi-final but after the break Waqaseduadua scored two tries and another from Chad Tuoro took them clear.

Kenya also had to come from behind against Samoa to reach the final as second-half tries from Sidney Ashioya and Injera earned them a 17-12 victory.

Meanwhile Australia walked to a 40-0 victory against France in the final of the Bowl.

Damon Murphy and Luke Morahan each scored a brace of tries while Aidan Toua and William Brock also crossed the line for the Aussies.

Finally Dave Moonlight scored a hat-trick of tries as Canada beat Uruguay 31-7 to take the Shield.
