Knights shine at Winchester Sevens

Tuesday 6 April 2010 (UR7s)

The Shining Knights were the surprising winners at the annual Easter Sunday Sevens. New to the tournament and unseeded, the Knights required extra-time to overcame D7W in a thrilling finale, 22-17.

Aside from the final, the Knights looked comfortable throughout the knockouts beating Elves 28-7 and the Druids 21-10. D7W overcame local side Otters in the semis before requiring over-time to beat the Farmers 17-12.

The Otters had bulldozed the Crusaders 40-0 and the Elves beat Spartans 19-0 in the other quarter-finals.

The Knights key game was in the pool stages where they overcame last year’s winners Koru Kamikaze 12-5 in Pool 8. The win meant they finished top of the group and subsequently meant qualification for the Cup.

Kamikaze bounced back to be victorious in the Bowl beating ‘70Bishops’ 31-7. Their pool defeat was their only loss of the weekend with victories over P.Phantoms and the Panthers in the second tiered knockouts.

The Donkeys beat Penguins 19-7 and Pink Lotus 28-17 in the Plate and Tankard tournaments respectively.

“It was nice to see some new names and winners on the trophies. The standards of teams were great. The winners were a young outfit from the local club Trojans and possess lots of potential. They beat D7W (the Dorset and Wiltshire development) in a cracking final that went into extra-time,” said organiser Jez Broadway.

“It’s a really fun sociable event that everyone gets involved in”.
