Malaysia showed their superiority at a special Asian Sevens tournament at the weekend, thrashing Sri Lanka 38-5 in the final.
The event was played at Delhi University's Hindu College acting as a dress rehearsal for the Commonwealth Games (October 3-14) with eight Asian nations taking part, none of whom had been involved at the IRB Sevens in Hong Kong a week earlier.
Top seeded in the eight-nation tournament, the Malaysians started their campaign ambitiously, trouncing Uzbekistan 48-0 before scraping past Kazakhstan 14-12.
The Malaysians were again made to work for their quarter-final win against Brunei and outplayed Kazakhstan in the last four to book their spot.
After topping their pool on Friday, hosts India began their campaign on Saturday in style, posting a convincing 38-5 win over Pakistan in the quarter-finals. But against Sri Lanka in the semi-finals, the Indians failed to keep the momentum going, losing to the well drilled and exciting Sri Lankans 34-17.
The Indians then met Kazakhstan for the third place play-off but ran out of steam losing 7-33.
Fans were not allowed inside the venue to watch the weekend’s action with organisers failing to erect a temporary stand and police deciding it would be too dangerous for a crowd to assemble.
Participating teams: Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, India.
