Serevi future with PNG unclear

Wednesday 31 March 2010 (UR7s)

Waisale Serevi’s future with Papua New Guinea is uncertain with reports claiming his contract has been terminated.

PNG originally appointed Serevi on a five year deal as Director of Rugby back in August, with a view to helping the side qualify for the Rugby Sevens World Cup in 2013.

Non-surprisingly PNG struggled against the world’s best at the NZI Sevens and Adelaide Sevens, part of the IRB World Series. But Serevi has also taken his side to Pacific Mini-Games, Gold Coast International Sevens, Tahiti Nieu Sevens, Suva Rugby Festival, and Darwin with mixed results.

Serevi has thus far refused to comment or speculate on his future.

Serevi coached Taipei before being appointed coach in 2008 by the Fiji Rugby Union to take the reigns on the National Sevens team. He resigned a year later, citing differences with FRU officials.

Although claiming his swansong form playing would be at last year’s Melrose Sevens, the former legend has since been seen around the world playing for a variety of invitational and clubs. Serevi participated at the Hong Kong Tens last week with the Hill & Associates HK Barbarians.

YC&AC Japan Rugby Sevens

This weekend sees Serevi head to Japan this weekend participate in the annual Yokohama Country and Athletics Club Sevens tournament, an event he has been involved with for three years.

The Club has hosted a tournament since 1959 with the hosts taking the title over the last two years, no doubt helped by Serevi and other Fijians who have been drafted in.

The tournament is Japan’s longest running event of its kind and remains one of the most prestigious events on the calendar.
