Wednesday 31 March 2010 (UR7s)

Keebra Park State High School defeated Hills Sports High 38-27 to win the inaugural ARU Schools Rugby Sevens tournament at St Ignatius College, Riverview on Wednesday.

Henare Wells was a standout for the undefeated Keebra Park, scoring two tries and kicking four conversions for a personal haul of 18-points in the a free-flowing final that entertained the crowd.

The final was the culmination of an eastern seaboard tournament which is part of ARU plans to further expand the profile of a sport now a part of the Olympic family with Sevens to be included in the 2016 Games in Rio.

The ARU Schools Rugby Sevens was open to all schools in NSW, Queensland and ACT with Keebra Park winning the Queensland qualifying section to take part in the Finals at Riverview.

Keebra Park is synonymous with Rugby League but ARU officials said tonight the inclusive nature of the Sevens tournament will act as an introduction to Rugby for players who may consider playing the game on a more regular basis.

Keebra Park High advanced to the final by defeating fellow Queensland-based School Ipswich Grammar 36-7 in the semi-finals while host School St Ignatius claimed the Plate Final defeating St Edmunds College 43-31.

This was the Keebra Park rugby league team that played. They didn't learn the rules and hardly trained for it and still managed to win.
