more »Aussie Amazon rule Hong Kong again

Australia’s dominance continues on the women’s Sevens stage with the Aussie Amazon’s defending their Hong Kong crown on Friday night.
Tries from Kristy Giteau, Cobie Morgan and a brace from Debby Hodgkinson, the 2009 IRB Women's Personality of the Year, saw the Amazon through at the Hong Kong Stadium.
China, winners of the women’s title in Las Vegas, were never in the game against the slick Australians whose efficient ball handling is a product of the team's Touch Rugby background.
Captain Cheryl Soon pulled the strings expertly at scrum-half and was a constant nuisance for the Chinese.
"To do it two years in a row is really special. We came here to prove a point and that was to play some really good rugby and actually play rugby, we didn't want to be denied that," said Soon speaking to the IRB.
"Hong Kong is one of the most high profile events on the circuit so especially for the new girls it's really special. I think we had five new girls coming in this year. Now we just want to continue our success."
Cup semi-finals:
The Aussies were pushed all the way in a nervy semi-final beating a physical and strong NZ Aotearoa Maori 12-5. The Chinese were also stretched by the always improving Kazakhstan with a late score the difference in the 14-7 win.
Cup quarter-finals:
China ended the chances of the Arabian Gulf 38-5, with the Aussies ruthlessly dismantling Malaysia 58-0. NZ Aotearoa Maori had no troubles with Hong Kong (47-0), whilst Thailand were very close to ousting Kazakhstan before going down 14-17.
