Kenya dominated the headlines on Day 1 of the USA 7s coming back from a 14-12 defeat by sevens minnows Uruguay in their opening fixture to eventually top Pool B with a scintillating 24 – 7 win over New Zealand with skipper Humphrey Kayange inspirational against the Kiwis.

South Africa and Samoa impressed doing enough in each of their games without exerting too much energy. That leaves mouth-watering quarter-final for tomorrow as the Boks tackle the Kiwis in a re-run of last weekends semi final.

Hosts USA came back form a one point defeat to the Boks in their opening fixture to keep themselves in the hunt for glory too. Led by the busy Chris Wyles they won their crucial Pool A clash with Australia courtesy of a last minute Justin Boys try.

Fiji made a strong comeback from a poor Wellington with Rokodiva looking particularly effective as they went unbeaten after a professional 19-12 win over the Pumas.

England are ticking along nicely too, although ultimately losing to Samoa in their final game would have hurt. Yet most of the big guns know that there is no such thing as an easy quarter-final and each game is genuinely difficult to call.
