Unique Hong Kong excites England's youngsters

Thursday 25 March 2010 (UR7s)

England’s youngsters are both relishing the opportunity to experience the unique Hong Kong Sevens atmosphere when the tournament starts tomorrow.

England has slipped back to fifth in the overall IRB Sevens World Series table following disappointing returns in Las Vegas and Adelaide. The English have happy memories from So Kon Poh taking the title here four times between 2002-2006.

18-year-old Wasps winger Christian Wade has played in all of the IRB Sevens World Series legs so far this season, impressing early on but has found the going tougher since.

"At the start of the season I was injured so didn't get very much game time in Dubai, then in George I was a regular starter and ended up as top try-scorer, which was a definite highlight.

"Since then I've had a couple of good performances but as a team we sometimes struggle to perform as well as we know we can do, we have lots of potential but we haven't made the most of our opportunities." continued Wade.

"I'm excited, I've heard a lot about Hong Kong, the fans, the stadium and the atmosphere so I can't wait." said Wade.

A week after making his debut in Dubai 2009 Wade went on to show his blistering pace and power in George, scoring seven tries to finish joint top try-scorer with his hero William Ryder of Fiji.

Last weekend in Adelaide England made a disappointing start losing two pool matches against USA (24-21) and Australia (17-12) but bounced back by beating Papua New Guinea (47-0), France (19-0) and Kenya (33-12) to win the Bowl. They are pooled with hosts Hong Kong, Wales, and Japan for this weekend.

"We are raring to go because of last week's disappointment and we haven't won much silverware so this is a good opportunity for us to out there and give it our best,” added Wade.

Making an impression

Another youngster making strides is Oliver Lindsey-Hague who made his debut in Las Vegas and looked impressive in Adelaide. Coach Ben Ryan has been playing him at scrum-half and the Harlequins man has been linking with veteran Ben Gollings efficiently .

"It's great out here, it's unbelievable I'm really enjoying myself." said Lindsey Hague.

" I can't wait to get out there on Friday to see what it's like and play in front of a massive crowd. I've never been here before so this is really exciting.

Lindsey-Hague only left Millfield School last year and was part of the winning side who won the Open title at National Schools. Millfield start the defense of their title today at this year’s event at Rosslyn Park.
