Big guns qualify at Hong Kong 10s

Wednesday 24 March 2010 (UR7s)

Robin Heymann, Hong Kong

It proved an entertaining first day at the Hong Kong 10s despite the usual suspects breezing into tomorrow’s Cup quarter-finals.

Defending champions Aliens were in ruthless form at the Hong Kong Football Club and didn’t concede a point. The Willie Los’e coached side started a 51-0 over China Agricultural University (CAU) but were made to graft harder by the Australian Country Invitational but won through 29-0.

The side, established in Tokoyo in 1992, finished the day with a 39-0 win over the Hong Kong Chairman X. Bryce Heems (6 tries) and Simon Munro (6 tries) made inroads all day.

The New Zealand Legends preferred to play a more physical brand of Tens in Pool B but achieved their aims in qualifying unblemished.

They beat two Hong Kong based teams Kukris (36-0) Hong Kong Baas-Baas (47-0) convincingly. Two Sami Fisilau tries made the difference in their final 21-0 over the Wild Titans and confirmed the kiwis as Pool winners.

The big game of the day saw Samurai tackle the Penguins under the lights. Samurai, visibly up for the Pool C decider, bossed the breakdown with fly-half James Wilson looking composed and classy in the 24-12. Samurai had earlier beaten the colourful Cardiff Uni 57-0 before beating hosts CBRE Club 45-0.

Borneo Eagles, winners in Darwin and at the Cobra 10s, also look dangerous emplying a feisty approach before releasing their elusive runners outside. They overcome the Overseas Old Boys (31-0) and a combative Irish Vikings (21-5), who included England international Michael Lipman.

The Eagles star man is undoubtedly Ritchie Ah Chong, whose lightening pace entertained the assembled spectators on Sports Road. Chong was again on the score-sheet in the Pool deciding win over KIR Club Pyrenees.

Thursday HK 10s Cup Quarter-Finals:

Aliens v Wild Titans
Borneo Eagles v Penguins
Samurai v Pyrenees
NZ Legends v Aussie Country Invitational
