Deans impressed by Australia Sevens

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans was an interested spectator at the weekend’s Adelaide Sevens. Deans saw the Australian team reach their second consecutive semi-final on the IRB Sevens World Series, before losing out to eventual winners Samoa.

The Aussies have leapfrogged England into fourth place with the next leg of the Series in Hong Kong starting this Friday.

“It’s been coming for a while and these guys are working hard at their game, showing some character and composure," said Dean speaking to UR7s

“There is some real young talent here with guys like Kimami Situati in school last year. That is how quickly these things happen.“

Not only was Deans impressed with the young Aussie side, he also admitted that some of his own Australian 15-a-side squad could turn out for the Sevens programme at October’s Commonwealth Games.

"Players might only get once crack at the Commonwealth Games. There are players who are now fully contract Super Rugby players who could add value to being back in the Sevens programme.

"There is the possibility, depending on what Mick (O’Connor) wants, that we can also release some specialist 15 players to play Sevens. Its not out the way that we won’t see a few. It is a juggling act. If the players are in the Wallabies programme it will rest with me whether I release them. We will obviously include the player in that discussion. They have got have a desire and interest."

Deans admitted however that it was unlikely that starters in the Tri-Nations would make the Commonwealth Games squad. The coach also said it was an exciting time for aspiring youngsters to be involved with the sport in Australia

“There will be a lot of kids observing this and not only recognising there is an opportunity there with a new franchise (Melbourne) but also now with the Sevens.”
