Samoa power to back-to-back titles in Adelaide

Sunday 21 March 2010 (UR7s & Photo IRB/Zoom Fiji)

Samoa secured their second consecutive IRB title with a sensational finals day performance at the Adelaide Sevens.

Stephen Betham’s side proved irresistible at the Adelaide Oval overpowering shock finalists USA 38-10 in the final. It follows their win at the USA Sevens in Las Vegas last month.

The undoubted star of the final was Mikaele Pesamino, who crossed twice in the final to cement his position as the number one marksmen with 38 ties this season.

It was the USA’s first Cup final and Al Caravelli’s side will take huge confidence from such a feat, as well as 20 valuable points.

Samoa Cup winners again

Despite USA’s brave run, Samoa proved too dominant with the forwards of Treviranus, Mikaele, and Fa’osiliva again in commanding form.

Pesamino scored two tries, as did Fautua Otto, while former captains Uale Mai and Ofisa Treviranus also scored. The USA pulled two scores back through Zach Pangelinan and Nick Edwards, just rewards for their weekend efforts.

To reach the day's finale, Samoa got their second successive semi-final win over Australia with a clinical 26-12 display Tries to Treviranus, Otto (2), Fa’osiliva proved too good for the Aussies, who scored through Quirk and Karauria-Henry. The USA booked their place to meet Samoa with a hugely impressive 26-12 win over an under-par Argentina. Shalom Suniula's double taking the US to their first ever Cup final.

Samoa came from behind to force extra time against New Zealand in the first Cup quarter-final. With Kurt Baker in the bin Timoteo’s golden try dumped the Kiwis to the plate. Hosts Australia left it late against Fiji but James Stannard’s double sent the home team through (26-22).

Zach Pangelinan was USA’s hero in their quarter- final clash with Wales, scoring under the posts with the hooter gone. World Cup runners-up Argentina also left it late in another thrilling finale, Diego Palma’s try a heart-breaker for Paul Treu’s young South Africa, as they went down (14-17).

Kiwis settle for Plate

World Series leaders New Zealand took out the Plate with a 21-14 win over South Africa. Tries from Tokula, Forbes, and Mikkelson gave them 12 valuable IRB points.

Earlier New Zealand beat Fiji in the first Plate semi final to win through to the final against reigning Series champions South Africa, who saw off Wales.

England muster Bowl

Ben Ryan's England finally showed their form with a 33-12 win over Kenya to take the Bowl. Two tries to Christian Wade in the first-half gave them a half-time lead and a penalty try and one from replacement Jake Abbott was enough for the four points.

England were professional in their 19-0 win over a spirited France in the semi-finals. Wade, Brightwell, Lindsay-Hague all scorers for Ben Ryan. Kenya joined them in that final following their 36-12 win over Scotland.

France were comfortable winners against Tonga in the Bowl quarter-finals with Yan Ruel impressing with a brace of scores in the 38-0 win. England hit back after a poor couple of first days with an comprehensive 47-0 win over lowly PNG. Leading IRB Points Scorer, Ben Gollings (2) and James Rodwell(2) leading the way.

Kenya eased into the semi-finals cruising to a 25-7 win over Nieu in their last-eight clash with Collins Injera and the in-form Innocent Simiyu going over twice. Scotland joined the Africans in the semi-finals following their win of the tournament against Japan.

Japan take Shield ahead of Hong Kong

Japan took the title with a 22-19 win over Tonga. Two tries for giant Alisi Tupuailei against his former countrymen enough for the win.Tonga beat PNG in the other semi-final (45-0).

Well done boys, what a massive win today, I know you can do it, I'm proud of you guys, winning against NZ is not
new to you, tackling the host down in the semifinal is something terrible for them, well boys, there's no doubt that you lead the World IRB seven serious now, you walked away with 24 points today, that make Samoa very proud of you.

Good job boys, well done Mr Betham, just go and get another 30 points from Hong Kong next week.

All the best.

Good Job boys...well done coach. This is our year as you have proven that local talent is still developed at a higher level. Every Samoan should be proud whether you know rugby or not. Go Manu Samoa.
