IRB Adelaide Sevens - Day 2 reaction

South Africa coach Paul Treu:

“We always had aspirations to end Pool B in first position, and I am extremely proud that we have achieved this. But I am even happier with the way in which this young side came from behind (12-5) to draw the match against Samoa.

"I have been saying all season that we need to start grooming our next crop of Sevens players and after watching how this young team responded against a side like Samoa, I see a bright future for some of these guys. In fact I wouldn’t want to be playing against this side after they’ve picked up a season or two’s experience in a year or so."

Australia captain Pat McCutcheon:

“It’s outstanding, we’ve been looking at how we can build character and build self worth in our team and I really think that’s come a long way. We were six points down in the dying minutes and to hold them up, that’s character building. The team’s starting to perform and is starting to perform at a top level so they boys are starting to realise we can be genuine contenders in this sort of tournament, and shrug that young underdog tag.”

New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens:

"I thought we played pretty well in that last game, we lifted it up again and it was great to have Save Tokula back on the field again after being out for a number of games. It was scrappy right at the very end bu you can expect that when you make changes.

"Defence is about winning tournaments and if you going to win a tournament you have to defend really well. We let one try in today and they were disappointed but it is to be expected sometimes. Some teams like Argentina will score tries against you. We got to take that performance into tomorrow. We got a tough one against Samoa."

Wales coach Paul John:

"To score 64 points against anyone is impressive and the boys were really professional. We knew what we had to do and we scored three tries early and didn't let up really. It was important to score as many points as we could to get us into the quarter-finals. So mission accomplished really. The boys have got a bit of regret about how they played against Kenya. Our defence was good for most of the game but our tackles were not as good as it has been.

"We're in the quarter-final so we hope we did better the last tournament we were in, where we pushed Samoa all the way but didn't quite get through. We have got to keep playing in these big games and got win one soon and the boys are growing with confidence."
