Defending champs the South Sea Drifters have selected controversial Fijian Setefano Cakau in their line-up for the Heineken Hottest 7s in the World.
The 30-year-old prison officer was dropped from the national team by the Fiji Rugby Union for the first round of the IRB sevens in November pending the outcome of an investigation into a death in custody. Police in Fiji are probing the death of an escaped prisoner Josefa Baleiloa with Cakau is a key witness in the continuing investigation. Although the FRU has ordered Cakau not to represent Fiji until cleared by authorities, Fiji sevens coach Waisale Serevi wants the veteran on board with the Drifters in preparation for the World Cup, according to Northern Territory News.
The Drifters will be seeking their third straight victory in Darwin and, according to NT Rugby chief Tim Heath, their squad is a virtual national side. With Cakau, Lemeki Duidomo, and the effervescent William Ryder all back in the fold they will again be formidable opposition. Serevi will be hoping that a good run in Darwin will give the Fijians some much needed confidence after a poor start to the season in Dubai and George.
SOUTH SEA DRIFTERS: Waisale Serevi, Lemeki Duidomo, Ponipate Kato, Semisi Naevo, Seremaia Burotu, Emosi Vucago, Niumaia Rokobuli, Setefano Cakau, Lepani Nabuliwaqa, Osea Kolinisau, William Ryder, Adriu Rinikama. Coach: Waisale Serevi. Manager Adriu Rinikama.
