Ivybridge grit out Fylde Schools win

Monday 15 March 2010 (UR7s)

Ivybridge Community College took the major honours at Fylde's National School Sevens tournament but they did not have it all their own way.

Cardinal Newman School from Pontpridd ran them close in a hugely exciting final with Ivybridge just taking it 21-17, courtesy of hitting all three of their conversions.

James Hallet walked away with the tournament’s MVP prize. The standard of the tournament was high with Filton also running the winners close in a dramatic semi-final before going down 19-12.

The second semi-final was equally competitive with Warwick’s great run ended by Cardinal Newman (14-19).

The last eight saw Ivybridge look comfortable against RGS Newcastle (38-15), with Cardinal Newman also proving too clinical for Whitchurch (28-17) in an exciting local derby.

Warwick beat Arnold 15-12 with Filton edging out the impressive Ellesmere College 14-5 in an entertaining clash to book their semi-final sport.

Defending champions Kirkham disappointingly crashed out in the 1st Round of the main competition, which followed the group stages.

Manchester Grammar School took the Plate competition with a 27-17 win over Woodhouse Grove with Radyr Comprehensive thrashing St.Ambrose College 38-7 to win the Bowl.

“The tournament went very well, all ran to schedule and the fine and sunny weather made for a great day for sevens,” said Tournament Director Nigel Pollard.

“The standard was exceptional with the likes of Filton and Warick playing very well, however Ivybridge was dominant throughout the day, as expected.”
