Pumas get boost for IRB Sevens

Monday 15 March 2010 (UR7s & IRB)

Argentina has made four changes to their squad ahead of the next legs on the IRB Sevens World Series in Adelaide (19-21 March) and Hong Kong (26-28 March).

The Pumas are currently lying in eight position in the overall IRB table and lost out disappointingly to the USA at the Bowl semi-final stage at the last event in Las Vegas.

Joaquin Tuculet, Federico Salazar, Jose Del Busto, and Pablo Calacrai are all included in Nicolás Fernández Lobbe’s squad for the fifth and sixth legs of the Series.

Santiago Gomez Cora’s injury perils continue with his time on the pitch limited in Wellington and Las Vegas and the IRB Sevens leading try-scorer not included in this latest squad.

The Pumas have been given a boost ahead of the Hong Kong tournament with the announcement that former Puma captain Agustin Pichot will be involved in team's management staff.

As well as fulfilling the vital Manager's role, Pichot will also be conducting a review for the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) on the High Performance structures required to compete at the highest level in Sevens, on the IRB's World Series. The work is part of a wider strategic focus on High Performance within the UAR.

"The goal of this trip is to be with the players, understand them, know how Rugby Sevens is nowadays from the inside so that we can then analyze the future of Sevens in Argentina. We are now looking towards Rio 2016, there is a real buzz around Sevens now that it is an Olympic sport," said Pichot, who is is a member of the UAR's High Performance Committee.

"Sevens has been very good for Argentine rugby as it has developed many, many of our players. It was crucial for our success in Rugby World Cup 2007.
