This Saturday will see the 3rd edition of the Ella Sevens Rugby Carnival in Coffs Harbour, Australia. Named after the illustrious Ella brothers, the Ella Sevens represents the culmination of many years of hard work teaching sporting skills and spreading the love of rugby.
The tournament provides a showcase for Indigenous rugby and includes many players and coaches who have participated in regional coaching clinics.
This year's tournament will be show casing more than just the best of Idigenous rugby but also some of the best rugby league talent. David Peachey and Milton Thaiday may no longer play in the NRL but they are as keen as ever for a game of sevens.
This Saturday, the pair will take part in the Ella Sevens along with ex-Panthers back Richie Williams. There is a big chance they will be joined by Nathan Blacklock and former Rothmans Medal winner Ewan McGrady.
The tournament will provide the first step on a pathway to the National Indigenous Sevens team and with 32 men's teams and 11 teams there is a lot of rugby on offer for all.
Twenty four men and 12 women will be selected for the Byron Bay Sevens for the indigenous squad and from there, men will be eligible for the National Sevens squad heading to the Pacific Board Championships in Papua New Guinea during November, while the women will form a National XV for future events.
First held locally last year at BCU International Stadium, the inaugural tournament proved such a hit that Coffs Harbour has been allocated the event for a four-year term.
Spokesperson Tom Evans said the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team had committed to holding the Ella Sevens annually.
“We have a selection process to enter a team into future International Rugby Board (IRB) second tier endorsed tournaments,” he announced.
“For indigenous rugby to be competitive at this level and contribute to mainstream rugby there must be an avenue for younger players to participate and develop their Sevens skills.”
Wallabies coach Robbie Deans, his assistant Jim Williams and Australians Sevens coach Michael O'Connor will be on hand to cast their eyes over the array of talent.
