Canadian Women's Sevens international Heather Moyse has won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics, making her the first international Sevens player to win an Olympic gold medal.
Moyse of Summerside P.E.I won gold on Wednesday at the Whistler Sliding Centre in the 2 Woman Bobsleigh.
With many of the rugby world's eyes on the Summer Olympics of 2016 and the introduction of Rugby Sevens, Moyse has been concentrating on the winter games for the past 2 years.
Moyse has not picked up a rugby ball over the time period, in part due to the fact that she damaged her shoulder soon after the Hong Kong Sevens in 2008. Under the direction of Rugby Canada she stepped away from the game to concentrate on winning Gold in British Colombia in front of her adoring home fans.
It has been an eventful few years for Moyse who was top scorer in the 2006 Women's World Cup in Canada and after a 3 week break she is returning to the gym to get back into shape in an attempt to get back into the Canadian National side for the 2010 Women's Rugby World Cup in England.
Moyse's dedication to her winter sport meant that she missed the Women's Sevens RWC in Dubai last year and though this was dissapointing her success has more than made up for missing out.
“I don’t think I even got this far in the dream,” said Moyse, who finished fourth when teamed with Upperton in Turin. “I can predict I will be bawling on the podium (at Thursday’s medal ceremony)."
Congratulations go to Moyse in acheiving what many of the Rugby Sevens world are aiming to acheive in 6 years time in bringing home gold for their countries. This experience is surely going to benefit the Canadian women as they aim to match their own golden girl in 2016.
