Australia Sevens will take on the best of Australia’s clubs when the Kiama Sevens tournament kicks off on the south Coast of New South Wales on Saturday.

Australia, playing under the Aussie Spirit banner, will be keen to impress coach Michael O’Connor at the Kiama Showground, in what will be their last tournament ahead of the next leg of the IRB Sevens World Series at the Adelaide Sevens in March.

Patrick McCutcheon will lead the Aussie Spirit against teams from Sydney 1st Division, Sydney Subdistricts, NSW Country, ACT Rugby Union, Victorian and Queensland sides, who will all be competing for a total $13,000 in prize money.

It is the 38th running of the club Sevens with the Kiama Rugby club celebrating its 50 anniversary this year and expecting 600 players in 48 teams.

Randwick, Sydney Uni, Lloyd McDermott and Kiama are just some of the tough opposition that Aussie Spirit will encounter.

Aussie Spirit, coached by Michael O’Conner, will open their campaign against North Sydney B in their first round match followed by Tuggeranong Vikings B.

One injury concern for O’Conner is youngster Kimami Situati who is rested due to a strained hamstring. Situati was one of the standouts in Australia’s recent impressive campaign at the USA Sevens in Las Vegas, where the squad achived their best result in two years by reaching the semi-finals.

Ten players who have represented Australia throughout the in Dubai, South Africa, Wellington and Las Vegas have been included in the Aussie Spirit team for the weekend.

Former Australian Schoolboys representative Mitchell Felsman has joined the side along with Benjamin Johnston who replaces Situati.
