Fiji club Sevens continues at Nawaka

Following last month’s inaugural Suva Rugby Festival the big club tournaments in Fiji keep coming starting with this weekend’s 23rd Fiji Bitter Nawaka Sevens.

A huge field of sixty-four club teams will take part in the open grade spread out over 16 pools. 16 teams will also be battling it out in the Under-19 competition at Prince Charles Park.

Injuries have limited national coach Iliesa Tanivula to fielding just one Fiji team following a heavy injury toll from the USA Sevens in Las Vegas. The shadow side, playing under the banner of the Fiji Barbarians, enter the tournament as obvious favourites.

Ratu Filise, Police Wardens, who all reached the Cup quarter-finals at Suva will all be competing for the $10,000 prize pot. Waisale Serevi’s Papua New Guinea, who recently took part at the IRB’s NZI Sevens, pulled out of the tournament to concentrate on the next leg of the World Series in Adelaide.

Another team not participating will be defending champions Naviti, who have also pulled out.

According to the Fiji Times, sponsors Foster's Pacific Limited has also agreed to pay the entry fee of the tournament's top four teams for the prestigious Marist Sevens next month.

Iliesa Tanivula’s national side head into camp ahead of the Adelaide Sevens next week and have also confirmed they will take their place at the Marist Sevens (5-6 March).
