more »Chile keen to take USA Sevens chance

South American qualifiers Chile are hoping to scalp an established team at this weekend’s USA Sevens in Las Vegas.
Chile were last involved on the IRB Sevens World Series in 2008 at San Diego, losing out to Australia in the final of the Shield.
At Vegas’ Sam Boyd stadium they will face Samoa, Scotland and Kenya in Pool C on the opening day with coach Edmundo Olfos aware of the challenge that awaits his side.
“All the groups are tough ones, there are no easy games. We are amongst the bottom teams here and we just need to fight,” said Olfos.
“I remember us beating Kenya in 2004 in Los Angeles but they are a different side now and Samoa come here with confidence after a good weekend in Wellington. Scotland can be an inconsistent side and we need to be able to be ready if they slip up.”
Chile qualified for USA back in January 2009 at the CONSUR South American championships where they finished runners-up to Argentina. They could only finish third at the recent 2010 championships but got some more game time at the Viña Sevens.
“We tried to prepare as best we could for the event. The major problem is that many of the Sevens and Fifteen-a-side players are the same. Our 15s season was long as we played 12 international games. Let’s see what happens,” added Olfos.
Much is expected of experienced captain Pablo Llorens and Tomas Olave with Aldo Villavicencio another player who is highly rated.
“These are the important guys for us and they have confidence in their game. Llorens and Olave have already played at this event before with Villavicencio a pretty skilfull guy.
“In Sevens you never know, anything can happen. I have told the players that they have to be perfect in their skills like passing and running, and if we still lose it has meant they have been deservedly been beaten by the better side.”
