LVI kicks off festivities in Vegas

Thursday 11 February 2010 (UR7s)

The Las Vegas Invitational begins today and features club teams from across the USA and Canada, as well as select sides from around the world. The event is running alongside the USA Sevens, the 4th leg on the IRB Sevens World Series, and like the international event has also moved from San Diego.

There are set to be 11 divisions of competition for men, women and youth during the weekend with the highlights the Championship Cup Series Finals (CCS) and the Women’s International.

A major talking point in Las Vegas has been the arrival of the sides from the East Coast, with bad weather disrupting many of the team’s travel to the event.

Organisers have yet to disclose whether the start of the CCS, featuring the best men’s clubs in the USA, will be moved from Friday to Saturday, to allow team’s suitable preparation for the $10,000 event.

10 of the 12 teams competing in the CCS qualified from the five premier Sevens tournaments in America to participate in what will be an historical weekend in Las Vegas for those in attendance, with two teams added as wild-cards.

Belmont Shore head to Las Vegas as one of the major favourites for the CCS title, with the Californian outfit triumphant last at the US Nationals. Denver, Aspen, Old Blue, and NOVA are the other sides expecting to make the latter stages of the event.

Six sides will battle it out at the Women’s International event with the final set to be played out on the main pitch at the USA Sevens on Sunday. USA White, China, and Germany make up Pool A with France, USA Blue, and Canadian Universities forming Pool B.

Catch up on all the action from USA Sevens this weekend (13-14 Feb) with UR7s’ Live Text Commentary from Las Vegas and coverage of the LVI.
