Ryder back to mercurial best for Wellington

Tuesday 2 February 2010 (UR7s)

William Ryder has sent out a strong warning to his competitors that he will be back at his devastating best when the Wellington Sevens starts at the Westpac Stadium on Friday.

Having returned back to the national fold in Dubai and George, Ryder said the two tournaments and his training has put him back to where he was in his debut year in 2005.

Touted world over as the automatic replacement for Waisale Serevi following a sensational entrance to the IRB Sevens World Series, Ryder shot to fame in the RWC 2005 and was in the team which last won in Wellington in 2006.

The Sevens world has been talking about the return of Ryder and the 27-year-old said he would be at his best in the windy city.

"I am absolutely ready and will back at my best everyone knows me to be," Ryder said.

"I am looking forward to this tournament because I have full faith we will win the Wellington Sevens. This team and its players have worked very hard.

"I played in the team which won in 2006 and the team which lost in the final in 2007. We do not want to lose as we want this title to go back to Fiji and I have it in my heart that this is our tournament."

Fiji line up against Australia, Scotland and Papua New Guinea in Pool B, following a semi-final appearance in Dubai and a final loss to New Zealand in George which sees the South Sea Islanders second overall behind New Zealand.

If anyone is to stop the New Zealand juggernaut on home soil it could be the Fijians following the announcement of Iliesa Tanivula's squad last week.

Although it will be tough mentally and physically, Ryder believes the current squad possess the discipline, something he admits had let him down a few times in his career, to succeed.

"Winning tournaments is all about discipline," Ryder told the Fiji Times.

"This is what I have been working on within myself and that is to improve on the field and off it as well.

"I have been working on the physical side and mental aspect of my game as well and this has been a 100 percent effort.”
