Uruguay’s national side, Los Teros, reigned supreme on the weekend winning the Gold Cup of the Viña Sevens with a nailbiting 12-10 win over Marist.

16 top sides from Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina descended upon the Valparaíso Region for the 24th edition of the event.

Chile's national side were also present, as their preparations for the upcoming USA Sevens in Las Vegas (13-14 Feb), the fourth leg of the IRB Sevens World Series, continues.

Uruguay had struggled on day 1 of the competition losing out to both Marist and Bank RC, but recovered in the knockouts and enjoyed wins over Liceo (21-10) and Hindu (12-5) on route to the final.

Ignacio Conti's double proved the difference to give Los Teros the win, with Geronimo Etcheverry voted Player of the Tournament.

Losing semi-finalists and qualifiers Rugby Cuyo proved to be the tournament's bolter and beat Hindu 15-7 to take third place.

Earlier Hindu had ended Chile’s run with a 17-5 win in the Gold quarter-finals, with the Chileans taking some solace from winning the Plate competition over Old Mack.

The Chileans have participated in five World Series tournaments since 2000 either in South America or the USA. They were last seen on the world stage in San Diego back in 2008, losing in the Shield final in Australia.

They have been drawn against Samoa, Kenya, Scotland in Pool C in Las Vegas.

They qualified for the fourth leg of the IRB Sevens World Series event off the back of their performances at the South American Championships back at the beginning of 2009.

"This was a demanding tournament and gave us an indicator of our faults. But we will know how to overcome them looking ahead to the USA Sevens," said Chile player Aldo Cornejo.
