The Amazons are the obvious team to beat when the women’s section of Darwin Sevens starts this weekend. Captained by Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009-winning captain Cheryl Soon and featuring a host of other Wallaroos.

Captain Cheryl Soon will lead the ‘Amazons’ which also stars Qantas Wallabies fly half Matt Giteau’s sister, Kristy. Soon was part of the IRB's successful Olympic committee in Copenhagen in October.

The IRB Women’s Rugby Personality of the Year and Australian Sevens Player of the Year Debbie Hodgkinson, will miss the tournament through injury.

Last year ‘The Zonnators’ featuring Soon, Alex Hargreaves, Jamie Blazejewski and Ash Hewson won the Darwin tournament and in the process uncovered the talent of Cobie-Jane Morgan, who went straight to the Wallaroos squad in her first year.

The top seeds will be joined in the strong women's competition by state sides Queensland, ACT Fillies and Keah Victoria along with the Parap Village Bunnies, One Brigade Fury, South Darwin Bunnies, Alice Springs and Singapore side Asian Felines.

Samurai reveal team

Last year’s semi finalists Samurai International have revealed their Darwin squad for the men’s competition to UR7s.

Regarded as one of Sevens’ premier invitational sides, fifth seeds Samurai will again be strong at the weekend with a blend of talented Australians and Kiwis making up the squad.

Australian Sevens internationals Damon Murphy and Simon Price add experience to the side with diminutive half back Luke Hamilton, 2009 NZ Nationals Player of the Tournament, giving the side a cutting edge.

Aaron Bancroft was part of the Hurricanes wider training squad in last year’s Super 14 and Glenn Robertson, Josh York, and Tom Cox can provide the pace to match the Kenyans, Drifters, and Aussie Spirit. 

Milton Froggat who coached Samurai to victory in Manchester last season, will again take charge for Darwin along with Geoff Alley.
