Latest Scores from Day 2 in Wellington

Saturday 7 February 2009

After a first day where no one came out unscathed it's knockout day in Wellington with everyone being in the possible situation of being 'one and done'. Who is going to find form today, are the perennial powerhouses going to come to the fore or is it time for a new champion. The USA looked like winners on day 1 but was this a day early? Can the Kenyans and Wales continue to impress? The only place for upto the minute scores and reaction is of course UR7s.com so stay tuned, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Bowl Quarter Finals

Tonga 21-0 Niue
Samoa 7-21 France
Canda 12-33 Cook Islands
Australia 22-12 Scotland

1431 (GMT +13) After having been recognised as the most prepared side coming into this Wellington tournament, Samoa have failed to make it into the Bowl Semi Finals and will now have to seek consolation in the Shield. After a strong performance against a gritty Canadian team the Cook Island will like their chances of being able to snatch the Bowl trophy but Australia are looming large.

Cup Quarter Finals

Kenya 10-7 Wales
Fiji 10-31 England
Argentina 24-14 USA
New Zealand 7-0 South Africa

1607 (GMT + 13) There will be an African nation in the cup semi-finals but it wont be the nation that everyone expected. Kenya stayed strong in their Quarter-Final to beat Wales and hold on for a semi-final spot. Yesterday's surprise package, the USA, could not continue their form bowing out of the Cup competition to Argentina; the team their coach Al Caravelli represented as a player. We will have a new winner for the first time this season, New Zealand defeat South Africa in a close game to dump the South Africans out of the cup and send the Wellington crowd crazy. England make up the semi-final draw comfortably beating a dejected Fiji side.

Shield Semi Finals

Niue 21-10 Samoa

Canada 7-14 Scotland

1630 (GMT + 13) For all of their grit and determination specifically shown yesterday drawing with Cup Semi-Finalists Argentina, the Canadians will not be taking home any silverware this weekend after having been beaten by Scotland. Scotland will now meet the ultra-competitive minnows Niue for the Shield trophy.

Bowl Semi-Finals

Tonga 12-5 France

Cook Islands 28-12 Australia

1748 (GMT + 13) Not considered a powerhouse rugby nation with NZ, Aus and the other pacific island teams as their next door neighbours, the Cook Islands will be 'stoked' to make it through to the Bowl Fina. They were absolutelty outstanding in their win against big brother Australia and now meet another Pacific Island side in the final, Tonga.

Shield Semi-Finals

Fiji 12-14 Wales

South Africa 22-0 USA

1843 (GMT +13) Mixed fortunes for the bug guns in the shield with woes continuing for Fiji losing out to the Welsh but South Africa take their frustration out on the USA

Cup Semi-Finals

England 24-0 Kenya

Argentina 7-10 New Zealand

1926 (GMT + 13) The Wellington fans are in for a treat, they will get the chance to see their beloved All Blacks take on England - the team the Kiwi fans love to hate! England were incredibly professional in their victory over Kenya, and the All Blacks toppled the only unbeaten side left in the competition - Argentina. It all seems a far cry form yesterday where the hosts went down to five men and lost to Wales. Now they are in with a shout to secure their fourth home crown.

Shield Final

Niue 0-26 Scotland

1959 (GMT + 13) The minnows came up just short but will be remembered by all in the way they performed this weekend, but the final against the Scots has been a game too far. Scotland ran out easy winners in the end, though that will be little consolation for the Scots as they were expecting better things then Shield final.

Bowl Final

Cook Island 24 - 10 Tonga

2025 (GMT +13) The Cook Islanders will be feeling on top of the world, after showing good form yesterday only to lose out today.  They have played some superb rugby beating large rugby playing Pacific Nations and are going away with the tropy. A fantastic win over the Tongans seals what has been a wonderful weekend in Wellington for the Islanders.

Plate Final

South Africa 26-12 Wales

2052 (GMT +13) The South African pride looked hurt in the plate final against Wales and they took that out on their opponents. Four tries from Deloprt, Horne, Dazel and Zanqua topped off a powerful performance. The South Africans will see the plate as scant consolation though as they came with the aim of winning the Cup. But it will be their two closest rivals that will do battle for that honour.

Cup Final

England 19-17 New Zealand

2137 (GMT +13) There will be no Coronation Street exit theme music this year! Ben Ryan's England team bounced back from losing to Argentina on day 1 to take a stunning victory against hosts New Zealand! Damudamu goes over after the hooter for a memorable last gasp win. Tries also came from Vickerman and captain Ollie Phillips with two conversions from the ever present Ben Gollings, and that was enough to see England through. More to follow!
