Huge favourites Argentina have taken the Men’s South American Championships on day 2 of the Mar del Plata Sevens. The Pumas successfully defeated Los Teros of Uruguay 21-0 in the Gold Final at the Estadio José María Minella to defend the title they won in 2009.
Wednesday also saw the start of the International section with the SA Vipers and USA in action. The United States suffered a surprise defeat by Brazil, whilst the South Africans remained unbeaten and look on course to meet Argentina in the final later today.
In the Women’s South American section Brazil and Colombia booked their passage through to tonight’s final.
Pumas kings of South America
In the South American final it was Argentina who got off to a blistering start after just 30 seconds as the increasingly impressive Joaquin Todeschini opening the scoring.
Tries from Santiago Gomez Cora and Francisco Grosse finished off the Uruguayans hopes, with all three scores converted by Todeschini.
Earlier on in the Gold semi-finals, the Pumas swept aside Chile with a 33-0 win, whilst Uruguay proved too good for Brazil (22-0) with their win confirming qualification for the 2011 USA Sevens.
The four Gold semi-finalists then joined South Africa and USA in the international section. The Boks started off confidently with a clinical performance over Chile (29-0) before working hard to break down Uruguay with their final game of the day 19-0.
The USA didn’t fare so well looking rusty against a rampant Brazil, eventually succumbing 19-0 to the Carcaras. Al Caravelli’s men performed better against Argentina in their following game but couldn’t turn over the hosts and lost out 19-5, with the Pumas remaining unbeaten in Mar del Plata this year and on course to meet South Africa in tomorrow’s final.
Brazil remain on course
In the Women’s section Brazil continued on their march to the title winning through to the final with a 22-7 win over grudge rivals Argentina. Argentina opened the scoring but ultimately they couldn't keep pace with the Brazillians physicality. The female Pumas had earlier won their first game of Mar del Plata with a 29-0 win over Venezuela.
Brazil will meet Colombia in today’s final after their hard-fought win over 7-5 over Uruguay. The Brazilians booked their position on top of Zone A with a 29-0 win over Uruguay.

Isn't the American side USA VII/Belmont Shore, rather than a true "USA" side?
