The Pools and schedule for the eagerly anticipated USA Sevens has been made. The fourth leg of the IRB Sevens World Series will see the teams travel to the San Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, the first time the city has hosted the USA tournament.
Series front-runners New Zealand head to Nevada as number one seeds and will face Trans-Tasman rivals Australia, France and NACRA qualifiers Guyana in Pool A. The Kiwis took the titles in both Dubai and George before Christmas and Gordon Tietjen’s side has home advantage the week before Las Vegas when the teams participate at the NZI Sevens in Wellington.
Defending USA Sevens champions Argentina will face-off against last year’s runners-up England in Pool D, with world champions Wales and Japan joining them.
The Pumas were deserved victors at last year’s event in San Diego defeating England 19-14 in the final, winning their IRB title with the first also being in the USA in Los Angeles in 2004. The two sides will face each other again as the last match at the end of day 1.
2008/09 IRB Sevens champions South Africa must face bogey side Fiji in Pool B. The Boks have already lost twice to the powerful Fijians so far this season, with the islanders in a strong position in second place behind New Zealand. Hosts USA and North American rivals Canada join them in Pool B.
Samoa are top seeds in Pool C but face a big challenge from George semi-finalists Kenya in heading to the cup quarter-finals as group winners. Chile, who are currently playing for the South American championships in Mar del Plata, and Scotland make up the Pool.
IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset believes this year’s event could be the very best in the USA Sevens' history.
"It is exciting to be holding the fourth leg of this year's Series in Las Vegas for the first time. I am sure that the teams and travelling supporters will be treated to a warm welcome, a festival atmosphere and what promises to be the best USA Sevens to date," said Lapasset speaking on IRB.com.
