Buenos Aires (URBA) stunned double defending champions Samoa to take the gold cup final of the Punta del Este Sevens in Uruguay. URBA got off to a blistering start in the day’s finale and held off the Pacific Islanders to claim a famous and well deserved 19-12 win.
Early tries from Gomez Alustiza and Camerlinck got the South Americans off to an ideal start. Pesamino replied for Samoa but Vega’s try at the end of the first half restored the two try cushion for URBA on day 2 of the tournament.
A superb defensive performance from Buenos Aires was the major feature of the second half, keeping the Samoans at bay until the ninth minute when Teolupe closed the gap to 19-12, but that’s how it remained with the Samoans failing to inspire throughout the most of the first day.
Earlier on in the day UBRA had won the grudge all-Argentinean gold semi-final against a Pumas VII 12-7 thanks to Capurro’s try. Samoa, winners here in 2008 and 2009, booked their place in the final courtesy of a thrilling extra-time win over surprise semi-finalists, La Plata.
In the gold and cup silver quarter-finals, La Plata stunned Tonga 10-7 with Mercerat the match-winner with the decisive try. Samoa thrashed Los Teros from Uruguay 26-0. URBA nudged past Canada 14-7 and the Argentina VII ended the Italians hopes 14-5.
A powerful first-half display from Tonga saw them take the silver cup over Italy, 24-0. The Tongans scored four times in the opening period with a brace from Poteki. The Azzurii from Italy had earlier dispatched Canada 28-0 in the silver last four.
Bridgestone VII took the Bronze Cup with a 28-17 win over Toyota VII. San Isidro Club Challenge Cup (SIC) also bagged some silverware wining the Challenge Cup with a 21-0 win over Old Christians.
