Favourites Argentina VII and Samoa went through the first days play at Punta del Este unbeaten, setting them up for a potential showdown later today in Uruguay.
Double defending champions Samoa started confidently against SIC, despite conceding three late scores, winning through 28-15. They finished top of their pool and secured their passage to the Gold Cup with a thumping 38-7 win over Tucuman with a brace for star winger Mikaele Pesamino.
Argentina romped to a 33-0 win over Wolves Moby Dick to close out their passage through with tries from Cuneo, Rosasco, Taboada and a brace from Tuculet. They were made to work a lot harder earlier in the day stumbling to a 10-0 win over a courageous Clover.
Canada also looked good on Day 1 proving too good for a Toyoto VII 28-7 and then dismantled Carrasco Pole 36-0. Italy were pushed hard in both their matches but edged past a CITI VII (19-14) and Old Boys (19-12).
Uruguay’s Los Teros suffered a loss to Silver (21-7) but overcame Bridgestone VII 28-21 in the day’s most exciting game.
Tonga was another international side who suffered defeat on the opening day’s play losing out to Jockey de Salta 22-21. The Tongans had previously come from behind in their first game beating Nordeste (28-24) thanks to a late Malupo score.
