Latest Scores from the IRB Sevens in Wellington

Friday 6 February 2009

Ultimate Rugby Sevens will be publishing real-time results as matches take place in Wellington throughout the weekend. Keep a regular check on UR7s as the scores come in to see whether anyone can topple South Africa, whether home advantage sees the Kiwis return to form or possibly a new champion. It will all be here on UR7s.com - 'for everything 7s'.

In the first round of fixtures, it has been the upset that has ruled with Fiji being shocked by Al Caravelli's men from the USA, and in front of the home crowd the New Zealand team were dramatically taken down by Wales after having Tomasi Cama sent off.

In other results the African nations have both had good wins and once again showing the competitive nature of the game of sevens, Australia had to work hard for their win over Niue, and the Cook Islands were only just held off by Tonga.

1921 (GMT + 12) - With a break in play for the Parade of Nations, to be followed by the four Pool matches featuring the top seeds in each pool, a couple of teams have already qualified. USA have qualified after a superb win against Fiji, led by the inspired play of Chirs Wyles who scored five tries on day one. South Africa have looked imperious, winning their first two games and guaranteeing qualification before their final game.

England and Argentina are due to meet one another after the parade with the winner taking top spot in the group. The other crunch game still to play is that of Samoa v Fiji. If the Samoans take the win as they did two weeks ago in Darwin then the first tournament for the Fijians in the post-Serevi era will not include a foray into the cup knockouts.

2039 (GMT + 12) Fiji got out of jail with a last game win over Samoa which saw them qualify alongside the USA from group stages and Samoa eliminated from the Cup. England came up short against Argentina losing out in their final group game, Argentina finished top of the pool with both teams qualifying for the Cup.

2100 (GMT + 12) Kenya win the battle of the African nations with an upset win over high flying South Africa, which was enough to see the dancing Kenyans take top spot in the group.

2100 (GMT + 12) The Kiwis finally bring the house down in the final game of the night/day with a win against the old enemy Australia and seal qualification to the cup knockouts.
