Defending Punta del Este champions Samoa will be heading back to Uruguay in the new year to defend their crown.

The Samoans travel to South America in confident mood following their promising start to their 2009/10 IRB Sevens World Series campaign that included a runners-up spot in Dubai.

Samoa have been victorious at Punta for the last two years and proved too strong for Argentina in last year’s final winning 34-14. The islanders include the likes of Jerry Meafou, Mikaele Pesamino, Timoteo Iosua, Fautua Otto, and Pale Toelupe who were also part of the Dubai and George squad.

Uruguay, Canada, Italy, Argentina, Tonga and Guyana are the other international sides set to compete in the 2010 tournament with the tournament hosted by the Old Boys of Montevideo club.

Canada and Tonga are set to make their first appearance on this season’s World Series in Wellington and the Punta event will provide both with some valuable match preparation. Interestingly the Canadians will line up in New Zealand with both Argentina and Samoa in their Pool.

Former Argentine and Italian star Diego Domínguez, one of the organisers of the tournament, has sent an invitation to All Black legend Jonah Lomu to come to Uruguay. Lomu was part of the IRB committee who was in Copenhagen to successfully lobby for Sevens’ inclusion.
