Delport out for 10 weeks

Wednesday 16 December 2009 (UR7s)

Influential Springbok Sevens captain Paul Delport was on Wednesday ruled out of rugby for 10 weeks after sustaining an injury during the George Sevens tournament last weekend.

Delport sustained a ‘Syndesmosis’ injury to his left ankle during the Boks’ match against Zimbabwe on Day 1 of the George event and played no further role for the rest of the weekend.

South Africa suffered in the absence of the livewire scrum-half, failing to go past the Cup Quarter-Finals for the second consecutive weekend running, before losing out to England in the Plate Final.

The Bok Sevens medical team also confirmed that Delport is also suffering from an Osteochondroma injury on his upper arm bone.

The expected recovery period is approximately 10 – 12 weeks and as a result, Delport will not be considered for selection for the New Zealand and USA leg of the IRB Sevens World Series.

Mzwandile Stick, who led the side to to their World Series triumph last year, has been confirmed as captain.
