Strathmore Leos become Western Union National Champions

Tuesday 15 December 2009

The Driftwood Sevens marked the end of the 2009 Western Union National Sevens Circuit and what an ending this tournament served up. Strathmore Leos were up against Kenya Harlequin FC in a match that lived up to its billing as the title decider. Fans were treated to rugby’s version of a photo finish. These two sides were tied on points heading into the Driftwood final, clearly something had to give, Kenya anxiously awaited a new sevens champion.

Some twenty minutes later, the Leos were perched atop the summit of the national sevens circuit by way of that hard fought 17-10 win over Quins. This result saw them not only claim the Driftwood trophy but also the overall title by virtue of accumulating 114 points over five legs while Quins settled for second place with 110 points. Early pacesetters Nakuru RFC were third overall with KCB coming in fourth.

The winning coach, Mitch Ocholla was quick to attribute his side’s success to God, the Strathmore University administration and of course his charges who acquitted themselves with discipline determination and dedication. He also praised Quins for putting up a good fight during the 2009 Western Union National Sevens Champion.

Quins’ coach Edward Kinyany was philosophical after the match, saying, ‘there has to be a winner and a loser.” He went on to say that his team got into their groove rather late in the day and were unable to stop the varsity side from prevailing.

This tournament brought with it two shock results. Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad stunned KCB 7-5 on day one, eventually bowing out to Strathmore in the quarter finals while Mombasa Polytechnic qualified for the main cup semi finals when they registered a 14-12 quarter final victory over Impala RFC.

All in all this was great tournament and I leave you with results from the various finals played on Sunday.
