New Zealand have continued their perfect start to the season by beating Fiji to claim the George Sevens crown. It’s their second title in as many weeks following their win in Dubai seven days ago.
The bedrock of their win was an incredible defensive performance which shutdown the dangerous Fijians throughout the final. Ben Souness got Gordon Tietjen’s side off to the ideal start by crossing early and when captain DJ Forbes scored soon after half-time, Fiji were staring down the barrel.
An Osea Kolinisau try gave Fiji hope but Save Tokula's try proved the decisive blow for New Zealand. Joint leading try-scorer of the tournament, William Ryder, last minute score couldn’t stop the Kiwis claiming the win.
"It’s a great experience for some of the new guys. We got some good unity in the squad and to score two wins on the trot is something pretty special, especially after such a hard year last year,” said DJ Forbes.
In the Semi-finals Fiji had overcome Argentina (19-14) while New Zealand needed a Zar Lawrence score to beat a valiant Kenya.
South Africa's title defence came to a disappointing against the Fijians in the Cup quarter finals, while the New Zealanders beat England in the tightest of matches (22-19) despite the English racing out to a 19-5 lead. Argentina’s Pumas upset Samoa (26-19) to book their semi-final spot, their third consecutive in George. Kenya started the Cup Quarter-Finals off with a 24-12 over Australia thanks to tries from Oduor (2) Adema, and Injera.
England captured 12 valuable Series points thanks to a victory of South Africa in the Plate Final, with Christian Wade particularly impressing with seven tries overall in the day.
‘We’re on the cusp of something really good here. I thought guys like Christian Wade and Jake Abbott were superb for us today. The physicality and defense against South Africa was really impressive,” said England coach Ben Ryan.
Wales took home the Bowl for the second weekend running edging past the rapidly improving Russians 14-5. World Cup winner Craig Hill and Lee Rees scores were enough for the Welsh and pleased coach Paul John.
"We have more points now (eight) than we had at this time last year so very pleased, I think they've exceeded our expectations for the first two tournaments."
Scotland took the Shield courtesy of a 28-19 win over the French.
